Beat

DEFINITION

In screenwriting and performance, a Beat is a small unit of dramatic action, thought, reaction, or change within a scene. The term may also describe a brief pause in dialogue or performance, but it is broader than silence alone: a beat often marks a shift in intention, emotion, information, or power.
