Karl Kani | The Godfather of Urban Gear
In the early 1990s, Karl Kani clothing was the preferred urban gear, which started on the East Coast, from Hip-Hop artists like 2Pac, Aaliyah, Dr. Dre, The Notorious B.I.G. and many more. With his almost instant success, Mr. Kani has inspired many more urban outfitters that spawned an urban clothing movement, FUBU (For Us By Us), Phat Farm by Russell Simmons, P. Diddy with Sean John, Jay-Z with Rocawear, Snoop Dogg Clothing, G-Unit Clothing and many more. This new clothing movement inspired music moguls to create their own companies, and wear their own gear to all venues to help promote their brand. There was no internet, no digital marketing, or Social Media at the time so Karl Kani’s marketing had to be genius, Rappers would wear his gear on Music Videos and folks would run out and buy the gear at their local urban clothing store. This type of marketing was contagious, and as the tragic and misfortunate deaths of 2Pac, Aaliyah and The Notorious B.I.G. occurred, it solidified Karl Kani as the Godfather of Urban Street wear. Those big shiny buttons with Karl Kani’s signature Logo on the front was the urban gear Hip-Hop norm, Rap culture would forever be different within and of itself. Something to be admired from Mr. Kani and many more to come. However Karl is not done yet, he is made his fresh new venture from Japan now on the West Coast focusing mostly on high end contemporary street wear. He has added a women’s line that accentuates a woman’s curves, and he also added his vintage line that we all know and love. We expect big things from Karl Kani and we can’t wait until we see what comes next, with the culture of Hip-Hop changing and new ways of digital marketing and Social Media, we will hope to be rocking the latest trends from the Godfather of Urban street wear, Karl Kani. Get the smell good ready, and get your swag on!
