Electrical lighting roles, power distribution, generators, fixtures, and the systems used to safely power and execute a production’s lighting plan.

Best Boy Electric

Best Boy Electric is the traditional industry title for the Gaffer’s principal assistant. The position helps supervise the electrical crew and manage staffing, equipment, power distribution, expendables, paperwork, scheduling, and departmental logistics. Some productions or jurisdictions may use an alternative title for the same function.

Lighting Technician

A Lighting Technician is a member of the electrical lighting department who installs, powers, adjusts, operates, and removes lighting equipment and electrical distribution systems under the department’s supervision. On motion-picture and television productions, the work is coordinated by the Gaffer and electrical department leadership.

Generator

A Generator is a portable or vehicle-mounted power source used to supply electricity when utility power is unavailable, insufficient, or impractical. In film and television production, generators may power lighting, distribution systems, base camp, specialty equipment, or remote locations and are operated with appropriate electrical and safety procedures.

Gaffer

A Gaffer is the head of the electrical lighting department on a film or television production. Working closely with the Director of Photography, the Gaffer helps design and execute the production’s lighting plan and supervises the electrical crew. The Gaffer’s principal assistant is traditionally called the Best Boy Electric.
