Director

DEFINITION

A Director is the principal creative leader responsible for translating a screenplay, teleplay, commercial concept, or other production material into the finished visual performance. The Director works with actors and department heads—including camera, grip, electric, production design, wardrobe, sound, and editorial—to establish performances, blocking, visual approach, coverage, and storytelling. On professional productions, the Director works within the production’s chain of command and collaborates with producers, studios, networks, financiers, or clients as applicable. Many professional film and television directors are represented by the Directors Guild of America (DGA).
